We are sad to announce the passing of former Club Member Peter Waghorn.
Peter joined the club in the late 50’s as a goalie, a position he played in the ICI Club with whom we had regular friendly games. ICI was employing a lot of University grads around that time, many of whom we welcomed as very good players.
He quickly made his mark with us as a fearless goalie and captained
the Men’s 2nd XI for a number of very successful seasons. He was very active on the social side of the club organising such events as
quizzes, car treasure hunts and bingo.
Off the hockey pitch he was a keen yachtsman and achieved fame as the Commodore of the Grafham Water Sailing Club. On a personal note, I and a number of members and friends enjoyed numerous sailing holidays on The Broads which may have spawned his love of the sport.
He was also a very active cyclist and chaired the Welwyn Wheelers
Cycling Club based at Gosling Velodrome. I believe that he was
involved in the coaching team that provided talent for the Olympic
Squad.
In the latter years he was very active on the management side at
Gosling and chaired the Users Sub -Committee. As you can see he was a man of many parts and certainly lived life to the full.
Our Club sends our sincere condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
