On Sunday 11th September, Welwyn Garden City hosted their start of season Funday, as part of England Hockey’s HockeyFest initiative.
The day started with around 50 juniors receiving coaching from our newly trained coaches and Duke of Edinburgh volunteers from our senior club. The children, between 6-14, played games such as rollerball, had an introduction to passing, progressed to advanced stick skills and ended with the much anticipated shooting practise, the juniors were treated to an hour of intense but fun coaching. This was followed by small sided games for the under 10’s, under 12’s and under 14’s, where they put their new skills to use! At the end of the session, each child received a goodie bag, with branded WGCHC merchandise and exciting treats!
It was great to see so many returning members, as well as 10 new players- capitalising on the increase in publicity for Hockey after the GB Ladies Olympic Gold medal. Junior training begins at 10am on Sunday 18th September.
With over 70 Senior members for the afternoon’s Old and Bold tournament, WGCHC saw new players and old faces competing for bragging rights and the trophy! Seven teams competed in a round robin tournament, with eventual winners being team ‘3 quarters’. Throughout the afternoon, we had OPRO mouthguards, ProShop hockey merchandise and Tyler’s WGCHC branded clothing alongside tombola, a bake off, guess the name of the teddy and raffle. The day was a great family environment in great weather, well organised by the WGCHC Funday team! We hope to see more members getting in touch or coming along to training to capitalise on the GB Ladies success!
