M4 - Catchpole saves the Points
Welwyn team { Cass Khan, Roger GordenSmith, Ian Catchpole, Mike Parsons, Terry & James Dakin, Rob Goss, Tom Godfrey, Tariq & Arif Hassain, Faraz Khan, , Tom Aley, Eric Watterson, Dan Sizer}
In the cold evening mists at Broxbourne, Welwyn IVs won 3-2 against Broxbourne Vs.
A late push-backup of 16:30 made later by the previous game overrunning resulted in Welwyn struggling to keep warm as they jogged along the side-lines waiting for the 17:00 push-back.
Welwyn started the game in a mixed mode, slightly cold and unable to decide whether they wanted to win the game. This resulted in two short corners for Broxbourne which were not converted.
Against the run of play Tom’s long pass to Cass Khan was pushed deep into back of the net. Before half-time Faraz scored giving Welwyn flattering 2-0 lead.
In a largely undistinguished first half, some highlights were Tom Aley finding acres of space on the right wing and Tariq Hussain distributing the ball around the pitch.
Broxbourne came out of the break with greater motivation and quickly pulled back the deficit to take the score to 2-2.
The keeper, Roger Smith was well lined-up to save the second goal, but pulled up with a calf pull which resulted in Cass Khan replacing him in goal.
Welwyn raised their work rate and with James Dakin and Dan Sizer running forwards to support the forwards, and then backwards to close down Broxbourne, the game opened up for Faraz and Cass to receive passes direct from defender Mike Parsons.
With Welwyn’s vociferous travelling support roaring the forwards on – thanks Tasha – Welwyn mounted numerous attacks won a few short corners. No goals ensued. Eventually a mazy run by Arif Hussain resulted in a fine individual goal as he flicked the ball over the keeper.
The pendulum swung and Broxbourne hit back and only some last-ditch tackling by Ian Catchpole stopped the forwards breaking through and enabled Cass to keep a clean sheet.
A deserved win by Welwyn against a skilful Broxbourne side which consisted of a mixture of youngsters supported by some experienced Broxbourne defenders.
