Mens 1s win 3-1 against Southgate Adelaide.
WGC 3 vs Southgate Adelaide 1
After last week’s up tempo and competitive match it was a strangely quiet performance from the home side against a team that is struggling in the league this year.
Two second half goals from Charles Southey and the opener from Paul Kimber were enough to give WGC all three points and keep them in third place in the league – but it was a tough first half where the opposition caused plenty of problems.
Despite a fast start where WGC created a few opportunities they took their foot of the gas and went a goal behind. Southgate were posing the home side problems with some quick counter attacks and without Andy Shore putting in some excellently timed tackles they could have been in more trouble.
With a few players missing Kevin Leighton had to play as an emergency left back and it took WGC quite a while to get into the game.
After going a goal behind though WGC finally got back in the game when a great break by David Searle saw him put in the perfect cross from the right hand side – the defence could not cope and in a scramble the veteran Kimber was on hand to poke the ball home.
It remained one all at half time – Ceri Sharma and Rob Sansom could have added to the score but their shots went wide.
Although not reaching the standard that they have previously set this year, WGC made vast improvements in the second half.
Searle was causing havoc down the right hand side with a barrage of crosses and Mark Skilbeck was running everywhere and controlling the game.
Kimber, in his last game of the season, was heavily involved in WGC getting back on top. A one two between Leighton and Sharma saw the ball passed into the box and Kimber was on hand to strike a snap shot at goal – although this was saved, Southey was on hand to stab home from a few yards out.
Kimber then laid on the third when he battled hard for possession before putting a dangerous ball into the box which Southey neatly deflected onto the post and into the goal.
WGC held firm, Matt O’Connell played a vital role in keeping the teams shape and Florence was rarely tested in goal. So it remains just the top two to play with two games to go in what has been an excellent season so far.
