A surprise last second penalty corner denies WGC the win. 2-2
After an excellent win over the league leaders the previous week, the team hoped to do the same to second placed Stevenage and it was looking good for 69 minutes.
On one of the brightest and warmest days of the year the pitch was not perfuming at its best, and played exceedingly slowly. This seemed to rub off on both sides and play was rather subdued for the first 15 minutes. It was not until a WGC short corner that Terry Edwards & Jez Rosenberg did the classic one-two to slip the ball behind the ex-WGC keeper, Dave Church, did the game really get going.
Stevenage looked exceedingly nervous; however both sides were making wayward passes, but at least chances started to come. There were some excellent breakaway moves by Ollie, Gary & Bryn, who were inches away from scoring on several attempts.
Unfortunately, Stevenage brought the game back to evens after a foul outside the 25yard line. The Stevenage forward took the ball to the top of the D as the WGC parted and allowed him to have a clear shot that Richard Leighton, in goal, could only deflect into the top corner.
In the second half both sides seemed to want the game a little more and chances came to both sides, but it was WGC who took the lead. Again it was the combination Rosenberg and Edwards who but the ball in the net. Minutes later, from another short corner, captain Pete Mullens was unlucky not to score when the keeper saved the shot without even seeing it.
It looked like it was going WGC way until the last few minutes when Ollie was sent off for a clumsy challenge. Stevenage then threw everything at WGC and in the dying seconds the umpire spotted a ball hit Nick Humes foot, who had until then had an impeccable game.
Stevenage actually played a nice one-two to score and save their chances of winning the league. The game ended 2-2.
WGC now need to perform against the lower teams like they have against the top team. Next week they play 2nd from bottom Blueharts.

Clarkey your dig at my umpirimg is hardly subtle!!!! I had clear sight of the foul and if you paid a little more attention, the other umpire agreed with the call too.
Snakey B anyone?

From the angle I was standing, Jez scored both goals, but I am sure other people had a better view.

Well done guys on another good result against a top 3 side. I'm beginning to think I'm not needed by the 2s!
Our record against the top 3 sides in the division has been imprressive; 4wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. If we had the same record against the rest of the division we would be in the hunt for promotion ourselves
