WGC 2’s vs. Berkhamstead & Hemel
Result: 1-1
This week, WGC 2’s played bottom of the league Berkhamstead & Hemel. From the outset, it looked to be a repeat of their previous meeting, which remained 0-0 until late in the second half. In the first half Welwyn had much of the possession, with Jules Kimber and Natalie Skilbeck making some influential runs through the middle of the pitch to create goal scoring opportunities. However, the opposition fought back with some attacks of their own, resulting in Marie Davis working hard in defence to prevent them scoring. Although Berkhamstead & Hemel had a couple of goal attempts and short corners, they were competently dealt with by Charlie Honour, Fiona Rowe and the rest of the Welwyn defence. The first half was an evenly matched battle between the two sides, with good passing up the pitch and many shots at goal. Despite many chances for Welwyn, at half time the score line remained 0-0.
With the fog rolling in during the second half, Welwyn continued their attacking mind set from the first half. Karol Butramis-Gair capitalised on the opposition’s narrow formation, and made some wide runs to create space on the pitch and skilful passes into the D. With Tasha Johnson battling through their defence, Berkhamstead & Hemel were tested and conceded many short corners. One of these mid-way through the second half resulted in a fumble around the goal front and Judy Errington executed a neat tap in to finally give Welwyn the lead. Sue Owen also had many chances on goal but was thwarted by an impressive display by the opposing goalie, which kept her team in the game. For the last ten minutes, Berkhamstead & Hemel pushed more numbers forward and Welwyn struggled to mark their players, needing goalie Erica Stovold to make important saves for Welwyn. With Jo Lee making some vital interceptions to the away team’s attacks, Welwyn remained a goal ahead. However, with two minutes to go, Berkhamstead & Hemel equalised after a long corner to make the final score an exasperating 1-1.
